Previously, these students
were simply integrated into the regular program as much as possible, without first starting them with the basics and working
their way up to their grade level. This only added to both student and parent frustration in the subject, as well as to the
perception that only a few could learn and do well in French.
In the Beginning French
program, it is my hope that these students will finally be able to finally receive the level of personalized instruction
they need to work up to their grade level, and reduce the level of student (and parent) frustration towards the subject.
Although the students still
do worksheets and work at their own pace, there are a few new features that will hopefully excite more Beginning French students
to continue with French. These include:
1.) Exercises that require
different linked Internet activities (to provide instructional variety);
2.) More listening exercises (through
MP3 players which the students can sign out during class) and speaking exercises;
3.) Pre-made quizzes,
tests and projects to allow the students to better demonstrate what they have learned and keep them interested in French;
4.) A tracking sheet,
which will follow the student from teacher to teacher as long as s / he is a student at the Valleys. (This will also prevent
the student from having to repeat the program if s / he does not remember the last unit completed when starting off a new
school year.)
